United has invested heavily in low-emission aviation, not only announcing plans to purchase electric air taxis and vertical aircraft.

"Existing technology will either force us to fly less, which we believe is an unacceptable alternative, or continue with a carbon footprint, which we also believe is unacceptable,"

Heart Aerospace, which recently redesigned its first electric aircraft, now known as the ES-30, expects the planes to enter service in 2028.

The 30-passenger planes will be powered by electric motors powered by battery energy, giving them a fully electric range of 200 kilometres.

The planes will also have a reserve-hybrid engine powered by sustainable aviation fuel, allowing them to fly for up to 400 kilometres on a single charge.

Heart Aerospace has also received purchase orders from Air Canada, Mesa Air Group, and Icelandair, and has received investment from Bill Gates' foundation.

"At first, we want to fly on routes of 200 miles or less," he said. "However, as energy density increases, the same aircraft will have a range of 250 miles, 300 miles, or more."
