Borrowers will be able to submit applications for the student debt relief program during the beta testing period and will not need to reapply

This period will allow the department to monitor the application site’s performance through “real-world use” prior to the official application launch later this month

People who received Pell Grants for college, a type of aid given to students from low-income families, will receive the most debt relief — up to $20,000

Anyone earning less than $125,000 in the 2020 or 2021 tax years, or less than $250,000 as a couple, is eligible for the relief.

The Biden administration estimated that the late-September rule change disqualified approximately 700,000 people from the policy.
