According to the New York Times, Kent Carter, vice president of the Arlington County NAACP branch, was killed in a series of possibly gang-related shootings that claimed three lives.

Carter was on vacation to commemorate his 40th birthday. Carter and his girlfriend were riding back from the beach on a hotel shuttle when the vehicle was hit by gunfire.

According to the NAACP branch, Carter was an activist and philanthropist known "for his dedication to, and uplifting of, our community."

According to the statement, the NAACP is mourning the tragic and unexpected loss and extends "our heartfelt sympathies" to Carter's family.

"The incident that occurred was accidental and not one where the victim was targeted," according to a Turks and Caicos government statement on Kent's death.
