Nury Martinez resigned from the Los Angeles City Council after a recording of her making racist remarks was leaked.

concerning the son of a fellow councilmember Martinez had previously resigned as council president on Monday.

"It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council District 6, the community I grew up in and my home," Martinez said in a statement

"When I ran for office in 2013, I wanted to make a difference in my community and fight for my neighbours." That is what it has always been about.

No one expected me to win, but with the help of district residents, I overcame the challenge and won the seat for Council District 6.

Martinez, the first Latina to serve as President of the Los Angeles City Council, did not attend a council meeting on Tuesday, citing a "leave of absence."

Her remarks were recorded in October 2021 during a discussion about the redistricting process.

During the conversation, according to the newspaper, Martinez referred to Councilmember Mike Bonin's son, who is Black, as "Parece changuito,"

which translates to "that little monkey" in English from Spanish. Martinez can also be heard complaining about the child's behaviour at a Martin Luther King Day parade

claiming Bonin's son was misbehaving on a float that would have tipped over if she and the other women on the float hadn't intervened to "parent this kid."
