Alex Jones must pay $965 million in restitution to families and an FBI agent who were harmed by the Infowars founder's deception.

The total damages are more than $1 billion after a four-week trial pitting the combative internet host and conspiracy theorist against the victims' families.

This includes a nearly $50 million award in Texas for the family of a first-grader killed in a mass shooting in 2012.

One of the families' lawyers, Chris Mattei, called the outcome a "historic" blow against "Alex Jones' lies and their poisonous spread, as well as for truth and our common humanity."

At a news conference, after the verdicts were read out, Mattei said evidence at trial showed that Jones’s fabrications had reached at least a billion people.

He claimed Jones carried out a 10-year assault "that made him very rich and exploited his audience's fears and resentments."

Jones was raising funds in real time off the verdict on Wednesday, urging followers to buy his products to support his defence.

After years of being pressed by this campaign, "the families realised Alex Jones' cruelty and greed knew no bounds, and they decided to take a stand," Mattei said.

Jones, 48, is now facing additional punitive damages in the Connecticut case as a result of a state law prohibiting the use of false statements to sell products.
